For over 46 years. Backstreet has beeen serving some of the finest deli foods and Sandwiches in Riverside. We are located on Nelson St. between Magnolia Ave. and Brockton Ave.
A little History: In 1953 Mac & Barbara McCluskey moved to Riverside from Los Angeles. In Riverside, they opened a childrens clothing store, "The Peter Pan Shop" in the Hardman Center. In 1958, they moved the store to the Riverside Plaza, and in the spring of 1959 they sold it. Mac & Barb then opened the "Beachcombers Club" . They offered after school events, swimming and diving classes plus vollyball and social events for adults and children. 1963 they sold the club, and in 1967 bought the "Nelson Street Market" and renovated it into the "Backstreet Restaurant". The Backstreet makes the best Pastrami and Corned Beef sandwiches on the west coast. The potato salad is the best you will ever have. The banana creme pie is world famous. The Backstreet has been voted the Best Lunch Place, Best Outdoor Dining, Best Kept Secret, Best Power Lunch and Best Garden Lunch Place. The Inland Empire Magazine has voted us the Best Sandwich and Best Outdoor Dining in the Inland Empire for the last two years.
In 2000 Mac & Barb were ready to retire. They sold the Backstreet to their youngest daughter Kitty and her husband Keith Holloway.
Keith and Kitty continue to cook and slice all the meat fresh every day and have kept everything the same as Mom & Dad. However, they have added a tuna sandwich as well as two salads. The Caesar salad has pistachios and the spinach salad has craisins, pastachios and shaved parmesan cheese with raspberry vinaigrette.
Each sandwich is served with a choice of Baked Beans, Potato Salad, Cole Slaw or Potato Chips, as well as a full pickle and fresh vegetable bar that also includes homemade Pasta Salad.
The Pastrami, Corned Beef and Roast Beef Sandwiches are served Hot.
The Turkey, Ham and Tuna Sandwiches are served cold.
Please stop in soon, we look forward to meeting you!
